13. Bryon knew that Mark was hanging in those love shack were people would do drugs and hard drugs. People there even knew him well they called him Cat. You clearly don't call anybody Cat. So because of that you know that he is passed there a couple of time and  he even knew that M&M was there. Mark was also bringing in a lot of money for the family and fast Bryon and his mom thought it was suspicious but did not ask any question. If you combine these two evidence it would have been easy to guess that Mark was selling drugs.

14. I think that Bryon was really shaken by what he saw happened to M&M, and he was so much in love with his sister that he felt responsible. For what happened to him, he was also there when M&M ran away in the crowd and never came back. Mark also knew were M&M was staying and told him late maybe Bryon could of saved him. Bryon also hold Mark responsible for what happened to M&M it could of been him that sold the drugs. I think if he wasn't in shock he would not have called the cops on Mark.

15. Now that his relation ship with Mark is finished he holds Cathy responsible for it. She did not like Mark anyway. She wanted to help Bryon but Bryon closed himself to everybody, he lost his brother and his brother hated him because of himself. He entered a world where human interaction is impossible. Bryon is emotionally hurt and needs solitude to cure himself. So he said bye to Cathy.

16. I really dislike the ending it was to hard and to fast it almost seem like the author wanted to finished the book so he rushed it. The part were Bryon calls the cops on Mark unpredictable but the part were Mark tells Bryon that he hated him his really predictable. Mark once said that if somebody hurts me I will never forget. We can guess that Mark will always hate Bryon for the rest of his life. All his love was transformed into hate.

17. In my opinion no because his life cannot but more mess up than what it is now. He should of tried to talk with Mark and maybe tell him that if he continues that he will call the cops but he should of let him a chance and he was to shaken to make any smart decision at the time. You just don't call the cops on your best friend or on your brother but especially not both. I't was the thing he regretted the most in his life that is for sure.

9. I think in some case the way she raised them might be smart but in others it's not. By no being worried the mom, the kids won't be worried either so they won't see what is good and what is bad don't won't care what they do because they won't know any consequence. I think that this behavior might cause reckless behavior especially in a environment like this one. In the book the people they see are not the best influence for them but their mom won't worry so they won't know what to do and what not to do. They will also raise their children like that because they were raised like that. But the good side of this is that the kids will be less dependent. But this has a large cost which makes it not profitable.

10.  I don't agree with that. Bryon got attack by cops when he was small, that's bad enough. I think that you just on,t know the difference between the good and the bad so you think nothing bad went down. Sometimes you also forget the bad parts and only remember the good parts. I think that with age and experience and maturity people often take more to recover from bad events and won't forget it. I think his way of thinking will change during this book. Because like he say's before if someone does that to me I will hate him for the rest of my life, we can of know that something is going to happen. And if he considers himself as a kid am I'm sure something will change his perception.

11. He took his revenge on Angela she had sent a guy to fight Mark friend but Mark protected him, but got a bottle on the head and passed out. He blamed Angela for doing that so Mark get's Bryon drunk so he will want to see Angela who is already drunk and Mark will give them more alcohol so that Angela will  pass out and that Bryon won't care if he cut's her hair. Mark really wanted his revenge because it takes a lot of effort to make this perfect revenge on Angela. So we can see he doesn't forget who had hurt him.

12. I think it's because Mark is a pot head. He probably goes around these hippie place and gets high often. You see that people seem to know him he also knows M&M's street name. He also defends every body their. He is rude and tells Bryon not to judge the people that smoke herbs. It's easy to understand that he is a  marijuana user and maybe or maybe worst. He maybe even sells drug and maybe that's how he makes so much money. Do we obviously know his not new at it.

6. Yes I was really surprise because Charlie was the third character in the story I thought he would be there until the end.The bar was also one of the main place in the book now I can't see them going to the bar anymore. I think the death of Charlie will grow Bryon and Mark apart they do not see the death the same way and won't react the same way. The death is really changing their relation ship they won't be the same. That was then, this is now.

7. Bryon is moving on and Mark his staying the same. Mark says « I ain't gone sponge forever». He is feeling apart not like before, he doesn't feel like a brother to him. Maybe because Bryon is growing apart of Mark he is not as dependent he sees Cathy he is slowly replacing Mark by Cathy. The new reality is more Cathy then Mark. He speaks more to her also. Cathy and Mark will also fight over Bryon and they don't like each other.

8. His dad keeps saying mean stuff about him and is not supportive. It's pushing M&M to hate being home so he spends more time every where. His sister also think he take marijuana that could explain with how he hangs and what he does in his past time. The hippie will probably give him a place to stay they share a lot.

4. They really care for each and other. The moment Bryon knew that Mark was hurt everything he was doing, thinking went dark and he rushed right to Mark feet pushing aside everybody that was on his way. He wanted to kill the guy that K.O. Mark really badly. He even went to the hospital to see him after, he forgot of his date thinking nothing but Mark's safety he almost cried. We can understand that Bryon protects Mark like a brother they really watch each others back.
When Mark come back with a shirt his size and say's he found it on the floor, Bryon knows he's lying but does not question him of his method he knows he probably rob it somewhere. They give themselves some liberty and privacy.
When the guy's are back home they speak freely of how the felt of the night, that Mark felt better when Bryon was beside him when he was on the ground. He tell's him that he feels that he his his actual brother. That represent how close they are.

5. (p.68) « Do you ever get the feeling that the whole thing is changing? Like somethin' is coming to a end because somethin' else is beginning?» He refers that the reality is changing, before they were all in gang they would do some gang fight they would die for the gang and everybody just slip away like nothing happened.
(p.69) «that was then, this is now.» Bryon says that. It's really the title and also the reality has change you can't do nothing about it you need to accept it. The past is the past «that was then» you can not go back you can only push forward. Things change you can do nothing about it «this is now» so accept it.

Reader's response blog
Chapters 1 and 2
1. Mark and Bryon live in a world with wear being part different might mean trouble. Some people don't want things to change they do not want black people to have rights, their life is already hard and black people should not have it easier then them. So people are racist and don't accept and understand certain type of people in this chapter we talk of blak people and hyppies. That they will be some trouble with the black guy and shepards gang. and maybe some problem related to the hippies mouvement. Being different in brief is being having a different idea, way of life or origin and can cause hate and stereotype.

2. I think she is first of all, realy tromatise buy her experience of racist and now dislike every white boy for not being black. I also think that she did not want to seem weak in front of all the other black kids. She needed to blame someone and the only white boy in the black hood.

3. Mark  will not think as much as mike, he won't feel the feelings of somebody, in fact he won't love a girl but will go out with her. The sentence like that also explains why he will always hate the cops. And that you won't want to mess with him. I predict that in the book Mark will find trouble and won't run of, he like fighting to much to do that. And he will fight something that is to big for him and will think is capable of fighing back but will get crushed.
